Dr. Nagamani Srinath

Recipient of the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, conferred by the Government of India; Member of the Executive Board - Central Sangeet Natak Akademi; and recipient of the Ganayogi Panchakshari Gawai National Award, the Government of Karnataka's highest honour in music. Distinguished Carnatic classical musician (vocal), composer, author, educator, philanthropist, and cultural leader whose contributions have significantly enriched India's performing arts and cultural heritage.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Indian Classical Music

Dr. Nagamani Srinath is one of India's distinguished Carnatic musicians, whose career spans more than six decades as a performer, scholar and educator. Renowned for her commitment to classical tradition, scholarship and artistic excellence, she has devoted her life to the preservation, performance and propagation of Carnatic music.
 

Her work reflects a rare balance of concert performance, academic pursuit and cultural service, making her one of the most respected figures in the field of Indian classical music.

Early life & Musical Foundation

Born in Jodi Gubbi, a village in Karnataka's Hassan district, Dr. Nagamani Srinath began her musical journey at an early age. She received her initial training under Sri Arekere Narayana Rao before undergoing rigorous instruction in the traditional gurukula system under the eminent vidwan Ramanad Krishnan.
 

She further enriched her musical foundation under several distinguished gurus, including M. L. Vasanthakumari, K. V. Narayanaswamy, T. M. Thyagarajan, D. K. Jayaraman, T. Brinda and Mukta, Gowri Kuppaswamy, V. Ramaratnam, and R. Vishweshwaran.
 

This remarkable lineage shaped a musical style distinguished by tradition, scholarship, and individuality.

She served as Professor and Head of the Department of Music at Maharani's Arts & Commerce Government College (Mysore & Bengaluru Universities), for three decades. Since 2007, she has continued her academic engagement as Visiting Faculty at Bengaluru University and Mahaveer Jain University, contributing to higher education through teaching, research and academic leadership.

A distingushed concert career

Beginning her concert career at the age of nine, Dr. Nagamani Srinath has remained an active performer for more than six decades. An "A-Top Grade" artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, she has presented concerts across India and internationally in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Throughout her career, she has been invited to perform at many of India's foremost festivals and cultural platforms, reflecting the breadth and stature of her contribution to Carnatic music.

  • Presented concerts on multiple occasions at the annual Music Academy Conference and Concerts, Chennai.

  • Featured in the National Programmes of All India Radio and Doordarshan.

  • Represented India through concert tours sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) across India, the United States, and Europe.

  • Presented concerts on multiple occasions at the Karnataka Government's Dasara Festival at Mysore Palace.

  • Featured in the SPIC MACAY concert series, presenting Carnatic music to students across India.

  • Participated in the Spirit of Unity Jugalbandhi Concert
